A special episode about personal experiences, education and the role supporters can play in challenging racism in football. George Elek speaks to: - David McArdle, the EFL’s Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion - Paul Elliott, former Charlton Athletic & Chelsea defender, now Charlton Vice-Chairman and EDI Lead. - Clare Buckley-Prescott, Head of Safety Operations at Stoke City - Walsall players Roman Dixon and Tai Sodje & a pupil from Whetstone Field Primary School This special episode supports Together Against Racism, which sees the EFL and all 72 clubs unite across two dedicated matchdays this October to challenge discrimination, support those affected and celebrate their communities. This year’s campaign highlights the importance of reporting racism directly to clubs when it happens. Last season, 63% of live racism incidents reported directly to clubs led to individuals being identified and action being taken. Supporters can report through club reporting channels, stewards or police, without having to confront an offender themselves. Andy Whing joins George Elek for a thoughtful and very open conversation about football management, mental health and what comes next. Whing reflects on losing his job at Barrow after working for years to reach the EFL, the impact that disappointment had on him, and the impact of a premature return to management. He speaks candidly about the pressure and isolation that can come with the job and also discusses recognising that he wasn’t himself, stepping away from Brackley, speaking to his family and the LMA, and why opening up has helped him reach a much better place. He looks back on building a promotion-winning Banbury side, taking Solihull Moors to Wembley twice, the challenges of rebuilding Barrow’s squad after losing key players, the growing pressures on managers in the EFL and how much control a head coach really has over recruitment, development and results.
