Show notes
Jordan Shannon and West Indies international Kieran Powell return on the PowettPlay Podcast to analyse the ongoing Test match between Bangladesh and the West Indies, with the game finely poised and plenty still to play for.
The discussion begins with another excellent performance from Jomel Warrican, who continues to underline just how important he has become to this West Indies Test side. Jordan and Kieran look at his consistency, control and ability to create pressure over long spells, while also discussing the impressive statistics that now place him among some of the leading West Indies spinners of the modern era.
That leads to a wider conversation around just how valuable a bowler like Warrican can be to the balance of a Test attack. If a spinner can hold an end, build pressure and bowl long spells, it gives the captain far more freedom to rotate the fast bowlers in shorter, more aggressive bursts - particularly in conditions where managing workloads becomes crucial.
Attention then turns to the West Indies batting and some of the issues that continue to hold the side back. Brandon King’s tendency to flash outside the off stump comes under the microscope, with Kieran looking at the technical and decision-making challenges that come with batting in Test cricket.
The middle order is also discussed, with Jordan and Kieran stressing the need for the West Indies to be more proactive. On a surface where scoring may become increasingly difficult, strike rotation, intent and finding ways to keep the scoreboard moving could prove just as important as boundary hitting.
With the pitch expected to deteriorate as the match progresses, the West Indies first-innings response could be decisive. The hosts explain why getting as close as possible to Bangladesh’s first-innings total is absolutely vital, as any significant deficit could quickly become dangerous once spin starts to play an even bigger role later in the Test.
With very little separating the two teams, Jordan and Kieran look ahead to what promises to be a tightly contested remainder of the match and assess where the game could ultimately be won or lost.
Can Jomel Warrican continue his excellent form? Can the West Indies batting unit build the partnerships required to stay level with Bangladesh? And could the first-innings deficit prove to be the defining factor in the Test?
Join Jordan Shannon and Kieran Powell for another in-depth episode of the PowettPlay Podcast, bringing analysis, opinion and insight into West Indies cricket and the wider international game.
