There is a belief baked deep into coaching: more means committed. More hours in the office, more film, more meetings, more nights in the gym. In this episode Coach Collins challenges that belief head on and asks an uncomfortable question. How many of your hours are driven by the work, and how many are driven by fear?
Fear does not always look afraid. Sometimes it looks incredibly productive. It sounds like worrying that another staff is working while you are not, wondering what people will think if you leave early, or dreading the loss you might regret if you skip one more hour of film. Coach Collins explains why two coaches can work the exact same fourteen hour day for completely different reasons, and why players can feel the difference. A coach running on purpose walks into practice with a plan and energy. A coach running on fear walks in exhausted and tight, and tight coaches build tight teams.
The episode gives coaches three honest questions to answer. If nobody knew when I arrived or left, would my schedule change? What am I afraid would happen if I did less? Am I doing this because it matters, or because doing more makes me feel safer? Coach Collins is clear that this is not permission to care less or lower the standard. Efficiency is not laziness, and building a better system that saves time is a sign of growth. He also reminds head coaches that whatever they model about hours becomes the culture of their entire staff.
The challenge for this week: track your hours for five days, circle the ones that actually made your team better, and question everything that is not circled. More does not equal better. Better equals better.
