Show notes
Most of us coach shot selection with two buckets. Good shot. Bad shot. And then we wonder why a kid pulls up from eighteen feet with twenty two on the shot clock and looks genuinely confused when we take him out. Two buckets is not a system. It is a feeling, and it changes depending on whether the shot went in.
This episode builds something better before your first practice: a ranked hierarchy your team can name out loud. Advantage shots at the top, the ones created by a real breakdown in the defense. Then wide open and in rhythm. Then the fifty fifty shot, the one you settle for but never seek. Then desperation. Then the turnover, which is a zero every single time and the one nobody counts as a shot decision even though it is.
What we get into:
Why good shot and bad shot is too vague to survive contact with a real game
Ranking shots on a scale your players can say out loud in the huddle
The difference between settling for a shot and seeking it, and why that one word changes everything
Why most teams live in the middle of the scale and lose winnable games doing it
The math of upgrading one possession per quarter, and what that actually looks like on a scoreboard
Teaching the hierarchy in live reps instead of in a meeting, so it holds up under pressure
How to correct a make and praise a miss without losing the room
Getting your best scorer to buy in first, because nobody follows a rule the star ignores
Charting it in preseason scrimmages so you have real numbers before the season starts
Your challenge: chart every shot in your next scrimmage by level, not by make or miss. Then show the team the number. It will start a better conversation than anything you could say.
