Welcome back to The Football Historian Podcast, hosted by Peter Kenny Jones.
Episode 62 is a special one, as Natasha Dowie becomes the first former female player to join the podcast.
Tash joins me to talk through her incredible career, from growing up as a girl in a boys’ game to becoming a league winner with Liverpool, an FA Cup winner with Everton, an England international and now an ambassador for Liverpool Football Club.
We discuss what women’s football was really like before the money, the sacrifices players had to make, training at Widnes, celebrating league titles in Nando’s, moving from Everton to Liverpool, scoring the winning goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup final, and being part of Liverpool Women’s back-to-back title wins.
Tash also opens up on her England disappointment, playing abroad in Australia, America, Sweden, Norway and Italy, life at AC Milan, the growth of the women’s game, why young players should experience football abroad, and why the women’s game must keep its identity as it continues to grow.
There are also brilliant stories about Matt Beard, Becky Easton, the LFC Foundation, charity games, commentary, the Liverpool Legends game at Anfield, Jürgen Klopp, Steven Gerrard, Thiago, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and more.
This is a different kind of Football Historian episode — but a really important one.
